Mind Games Mondays: Free Chess Night in Providence
Chess, Connect 4, and whatever else is on the shelf, every Monday from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at The Bubbler VR on Charles St. There is no entry fee, no bracket to qualify for, and no requirement to play VR. Sit down at an open board and someone will take the other side.
Every game you play gets you ranked on the Bubbler leaderboard.
Registration just helps us set out enough boards. Walk-ins are always welcome.
What Is Mind Games Mondays?
It is a board game night, run the way board game nights used to run. We put out the chess sets and the Connect 4, open the doors at six, and let people find each other. No clocks unless you want one, no rating requirement, no sign-up sheet once you are through the door.
The leaderboard is the only structure. Every game gets logged, so over a few weeks you can see who is actually winning and who just talks a lot. That is enough competition to keep it interesting without turning a Monday into a tournament.
It is also the cheapest night we run, because it is free. If you have been curious about the lounge but did not want to commit to a VR booking, this is the night to come find out what the place is like.
How the Night Runs
Doors open. Grab a board, grab a seat. Nothing to sign up for once you are here.
The whole night is all ages, start to finish. No late cutoff for kids and no 21+ block. Under 13 should come with an adult.
Play whoever is free. Chess, Connect 4, and the rest of the shelf. Games run casual, no clocks unless you want one.
Wins get logged to the Bubbler leaderboard, so the regulars have something to argue about next week.
Last games wrap. The VR stations are open the whole time if you want to switch it up.
Drinks While You Play
The full dirty soda menu is available all night at $5.00 a cup. Seven builds, all made to order at the counter. You are welcome to bring your own food in as well.
Where It Happens
The Bubbler VR, 568 Charles St, Providence, RI 02904. About eight minutes from downtown Providence and easy from I-95. We are inside an industrial building, so look for the neon. Street parking out front is free with no meters to feed.
Questions About Chess Night
How much does chess night cost?
Nothing. Mind Games Mondays is free to attend. Register on Eventbrite so we know roughly how many boards to set out, though nobody gets turned away for walking in.
Do I need to be good at chess?
No. This is a casual night, not a rated tournament. We get complete beginners, people who play online and have never played over a board, and a few who are genuinely very good. You will find someone at your level.
Do I need to bring a chess set?
No, we have boards. Bring your own if you have one you like playing on.
Is there an age limit?
All ages are welcome at Mind Games Mondays. Kids play, parents play, and plenty of people show up solo. Under 13 should come with an adult.
Do I have to play VR?
Not at all. Mind Games Mondays is a board game night. The VR stations are open if you want to book one, but nothing about the night requires it.
Can I come alone?
Most people do. Sit down at an open board and someone will take the other side. That is the whole point of the night.
